Field Trip!

This past Monday, September 14th, we took a field trip to the 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home and Museum. Your children had an amazing time and it was SO great to get out of the classroom for a little while. Below are some snapshots of the trip! Enjoy!

Can't wait to have another wonderful week in room 25!

Week in Review: Week 5

Here are a few snapshots of our week!

Counselor Visit
This week our students got to me our wonderful school counselor, Ms. Aguero. She came to visit our room and teach the students what she does to help the children in our building.

Living vs. Non-Living
This week we started our first science unit. To kick things off, we made a chart of things we thought were living and non-living. Even if students had some misconceptions, I kept the items on the sides they wanted. This will give us a good opportunity to return later after we have learned and possibly change our answers.

Number Bonds Galore!
This week we have worked hard in math to understand number bond addition. We have done practice building the number 10 with snap cubes, using a number balance to find different number combinations, addition games on the SMART Board, and individual math stations with number bond practice. We will continue this topic into the next week but adding in how to turn the bonds into number sentences!

Classroom Library
Something I started during this week was allowing the kiddos to read back in the classroom library area. They have been eye-balling that section of the room for awhile now and I am finally allowing them to explore. We will eventually have "book nook" spots where they can use the comfy chair, stools, pillow, etc... but that will come with time. Also, in the future, the students will have access to the room library.

Jolly Phonics Activities
Each day we practice our phonics through the Jolly Phonics/Grammar program. Here is a quick snapshot of a game the students love to play. The snake will say a sound and the student has to identify the picture that begins with that sound.

Thanks for stopping in! See you at the end of next week!

Week Four!

I would first like to thank those parents that made it out to the Luff Open House on Thursday evening. It was so great to visit with you again and have some time to talk about the things going on this year!

Next, I would like to inform/remind everyone that Monday is our first FIELD TRIP! We will be visiting the Old Jailhouse Museum in Independence. It is only a half-day trip that the students will LOVE!

Lastly, here is are a few snapshots from our week!

Tricky Word Practice
If you were able to come to the open house, then you received a Tricky Word list. If you were not able to attend, the list was sent home with your child. We practice these words every day in the classroom, but the extra practice at home is so important. You can do something as easy as make flash cards for your kiddo to practice with (similar to whats pictured below).

Sound of the Week Hunt!
Something that I have discovered that the kiddos love is hunting in their poem of the week for that weeks sound focus. Last week our focus was the /th/ sound. I told them how many I had found in the poem and set them off to try and find the same amount. They look so hard and read so many words containing that sound during this time. It is very thrilling to see!

I Help When I...
During writing time this week I introduced the students to the whiteboards. They absolutely love using these! During writing time we practiced writing sentences that started with the words "I help when I..." They had to finish the sentence. This eventually transitioned into stories on paper, but this was a good introduction activity to get their ideas flowing.

Work Before You Play
One of the 7 habits of being a good leader is "Putting First Things First." What that transitions to in the classroom is a phrase your kiddos know all too well from me... "Work before you play!" Therefore, I often look for opportunities to encourage students to get their work done in order to earn some free fun time. After the students wrote there "I help when I..." sentences, I gave them free draw time on the white boards. They earned this time and had so much fun!
